The linen shirt
Braies as underpants for men were the only clothes in medieval times which were washed regulary. There was no female counterpart.
The length of this product is done in the typical length in high medieval times and its function was, like the one from the shirts, to seperate the wool from the under garments from the body. It protects the body from the itchy wool and the wool from staining with sweat and others from the body itself.
The braies were the only clothes which were worn by all men, no matter of their standings.
There are comparatively many pictures of braies, although it was only body linen. In the Morgan Bible itself you will find around ten of them pictured. Exactly this version you will find on the above-named Folio 18 recto for example. In the Sachsenspiegel, who is the reference for our region in High Middle Ages, there are pictures of braies to see on the folios 25 and 33 both recto.
